GOAL RACE PREASEASON RACE #3

GOAL RACE: preseason race #3 was my sub-30 5K goal race. I have run 2 sub-30 5ks before but barely: 29:59 & 29:58. This time I wanted to crush my way into the sub-30 mark. I chose the chocolate sundae 5k in Sanford FL. It is a flat coarse, chip timed through beautiful downtown Sanford. This coarse was more of what I like than the last 2, more scenery! The draw of the race: Every finisher received a free sundae!

In order to get my sub-30 goal I made 3 big changes to my routine:

1) Warm-up, never really do anything pre-race besides some lame stretches. Today I ran a mile at a 1 minute walk/run ratio, felt pretty loose, built up the pre-race confidence.

2) Move toward the front of the start line, felt good not having to weed through so many walkers, saved a ton of time and energy. Stayed to the right so not to disturb racers that were faster than I.

3) Mental toughness is a bitch, most races as soon as I start feeling tired, winded, sore, just about anything I back off the gas, this one I sucked it up and pushed, mentally told myself that I could.

For all these changes I was rewarded with a 27:36 finish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOO!

Extra special was my wife being there running her first 5k/race in 2+ years, and the chocolate sundaes they were handing out at the end weren’t so bad ;)!

Sub-30 Club PRESEASON RACE #2

Meeting amazing people has been one of the greatest things running has gifted me. One of those gifts has been the Facebook group “The Sub-30 Club”. Started by a gentleman named Ted Spiker, while on his quest for a healthier life, he made a goals of running a sub 30 minute 5k. People have come from far and wide to join the group, many are on the way to the sub-30 goal and many have already conquered it. The amazing part is that most of the folks who have completed the feat have stayed on to provide advise, inspiration, & share their new goals! Topics from 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, full marathons, ultra runs, bacon, foods, destination races… And so much more.

Preseason race #3: run for the trees 5k. A local running store that I frequent put this race on. The awesomeness of the race is that instead of a finishers medal at the end, everyone receives a small tree to plant! I signed up for this run because in a post of the sub-30 club another member mentioned it and we talked and decided to run it together! We met up pre-race, and decided that we would go at his pace which would bring us in at a 31-33 5k. The coarse again was through neighborhoods but with much bigger houses than the last, the nicest part of the coarse was a 3/4 run through a private dirt road that is closed off to the public and only opened up once a year just for this race.

Beautiful variety of trees, a new running friend, we came in at our goal, and I got my tree, overall an awesome day!

PRESEASON RACE #1

Well as part of my first own running season, I decided that it would be nice to put together my own “preseason”!

I don’t follow a training plan, I basically fill in runs when I can & increase the mileage gradually. My preseason will consist of your typical training runs, and local 5ks
to get me race minded. Now like my races that I have planned for later I will run some of these just for fun with no time goals and 1 with a PR time goal In mind.image

RACE 1: The Lake Nona pig run 5k! It’s a small local race that’s not even timed and had no bibs, but what it did have was… Wait for it… DUNKIN DONUTS as a sponsor!! The draw was that at 1.5 miles there is a donut pit stop, yeah, now your all about this race huh!?

My good running buddy Kelly Scott’s birthday fell on race day, so we decided that getting her a PR would be awesome (and by we I mean me). The race race ran through some lovely local neighborhoods, it was hot but not as humid as usual. The course had tons of trees on it so the shade was greatly appreciated, overall not my thing as far as a coarse goes but it was nice. Now for the part where you will find every thing went horribly wrong… In keeping our PR goal we skipped the donut pit stop… I will let you recover from that, take your time. Back yet? Okay then, we continued on our way and crossed the line with a brand new fresh 5k PR for her!!!

Sweet bling:

1:1 walk intervals + no donuts = success! 1 preseason run done, 3 to go!

GOODWILRUNNIN

Welcome, Welcome,  Welcome!!!

Here we are at my first ever personal running season!! The beginning of my transformation from a couch potato, struggling to tie his shoe lace aroundstomach mountain, very badly behaving diabetic. Into a dead sexy, running machine, who shops at all the skinny people stores… or something close to that!

I have mapped out my season complete with a pre-season filled with training, & local 5ks. My season will consist of 6 half marathons & 1 full marathon in a seven month span. Races from the east coast of Florida, across the state to the west coast. From Florida to California and Pennsylvania for a crazy meet-up with my Sub-30 running group.

Well I plan on running some races for personal bests and jogging some just for fun. Plan on meeting as many crazy, awesome, interesting people as I can. In the end though, I plan on impressing myself with accomplishment, inspiring my family, getting healthier, but overall enjoying and living my life… One mile at a time!
